The changes in Jon were subtle. So subtle that he wouldn't have noticed them even if he'd had the opportunity to pay attention.
In class and talking to other students he paid more attention to faces, made eye contact more often. He focused more on what people were saying, and how they said it. He became wordier when he spoke, and talked slightly faster.
He'd had a quiz in English that day, which turned out to be much easier than he'd expected. It was easier to articulate responses, and the answers to the vocabulary section came to him immediately.
His math test was harder than he'd expected, though. He had trouble visualizing and rotating the geometric shapes in his head, and had to spend more time drawing things out before they made sense. When class ended, he'd still had 2 questions left unanswered on the test.
"Man, that was a rough test," he said to Karyn as they walked towards the cafeteria. "I didn't even get to the last two problems. How do you think you did?"
"Seriously," she said. "I'll be lucky to get a B on that thing."
Unfortunately for Jon, lunch at the school cafeteria was not going to make his already bad day any better.
