All seemed well in Jon's quiet little town, until the day the stone was found by Simon Blackheart, a 35-year old financial advisor who lived in one of the neighboring towns, but worked in Jon's town.
It was 9 pm and he was leaving work to go home.
He had been walking down the street, when suddenly he accidentally dropped his car keys. He was such a klutz. And to make things worse, his keys dropped down into a sewer grate. He crammed his right hand into one of the grate's holes, almost getting stuck, trying to get at his keys. That was when his finger brushed against the wishing stone that had been stuck under that grate for the last several weeks.
In frustration, Simon said "I wish I could just get those keys." Suddenly, a bright light flashed from beneath the grate. It caused him to momentarily look away. When he looked back, his keys were resting in the palm of his left hand.
"Huh? How did that happen?"
It didn't take him long, however, to figure out that his wish had been granted.
Without removing his right hand from the grate, he looked down into it and saw the stone that his finger had brushed. He touched it again and said "I wish that stone was in my hand." The same flash as before and the stone was now in his hand.
"I wish my right hand was free from the grate." And his hand was free.
"I wish to know how many wishes I can make." He could wish for as many as he wanted. His eyes went wide. The possibilities were endless. He could finally have all of his dreams come true.
He sat there next to that grate for the next half hour, wondering what to wish for next.
