"Hey, Vicky," Jessica said, smiling as she walked into the bedroom.
Victoria looked up from a book she was reading. "Jess? What are you doing here? Does my mom know?"
"What difference does it make?" Jessica asked. "She doesn't control your life, you know."
Victoria put her book down and sat up on her bed. "She doesn't approve of you. She never has."
"Well, I don't approve of her either. Did you see what she's wearing? Nothing but rags."
"Can we change the subject?" Victoria asked. "Why did you come here?"
"Isn't it obvious? I came to pick you up for your appointment."
"What appointment?"
"With the modeling agency."
"But I don't have an appoint ..."
"I made one for you," Jessica said.
Victoria stood up from the bed. "What? Why would you do that?"
"Because it's the right thing? Come on, Vicky. With a body like yours, you'd be perfect."
"I can't believe this."
"I know. It's a big step."
"No!" Victoria yelled suddenly. "I mean I can't believe my mom was right about you."
"What are you talking about? I'm trying to help you. Help you make something of your life. All your mom wants is for you to go to college to become a scientist like her. Bor-ring."
"It may be boring to you, but not to me. I'm not going to that appointment, Jess. I'm staying right here."
"Fine! Don't expect to see me again!" Jessica yelled, leaving the room in a huff.
"Like I'd want to!" Victoria yelled after her.
With nowhere else to go, Jessica decided to go to her parents' house. At least they wouldn't toss her out.
