They intently watched Jon's digital clock. When it hit six o'clock, everything froze. Motionless, Karyn watched as Jon's room dissolved all around her until there was nothing but blackness. Then color filled her vision as new surroundings appeared around her.

In another few seconds, time resumed. As it did, new memories filled her mind. Her entire new life as a geek.

She was in her bedroom, doing her homework at her desk. She stood up and looked in her mirror. She wore a plain white conservative blouse and a beige miniskirt. Looking down, she saw a pair of black mary-janes and white knee-high socks. She looked back up at the mirror and saw her face. It was her face, but she obviously had an acne problem and she now wore thick glasses. Her hair was back to its normal natural red color, but it was greasy and matted, like she never took care of it. She felt something in her mouth and when she opened it, she saw that she had a retainer.

"I really am a geek," she said out loud. At least her voice sounded the same.

She walked to her bed and sat down. It was weird to have two sets of memories. Obviously it was the Karyn from the previous reality who was in control, but she still had the memories of the geek Karyn. And that included her superior intellect. She discovered that growing up as a geek may have ruined her social status (not that the original Karyn had much of one to begin with), but in turn she had a better chance of becoming smart. Really smart.

She walked back to her desk and sat down.

"Pre-Calculus?" she said, looking down at the homework she was doing. Pre-Cal was the math that Seniors took, not Juniors. She looked down at the sheet of paper with her handwriting on it. She actually understood it.

For the next few hours, she did her homework. It was weird, but she actually enjoyed it. After it was done, she decided to watch a movie. She picked one out that was one of her favorites: Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan.

"Wait a minute. I don't like sci-fi," Karyn said. But her geek side insisted that she did. Reluctantly, she watched the movie and found that she actually liked it. Maybe sci-fi isn't as bad as I thought, Karyn thought.

Before she went to sleep, she thought that she would get a little reading in. She grabbed her book from the nightstand, thinking it would be a mystery novel, like always. But instead it was something else that wasn't even fiction.

A Briefer History of Time by Stephen Hawking

"What?" She couldn't believe it, yet at the same time she could. She could remember reading it the previous night, since she still had the geek Karyn's memories.

She really didn't feel like reading non-fiction, so she decided to just go to sleep, which she did. The next day was Saturday, so maybe she could meet up with Jon and talk about her situation.
