Jon got his bookbag from his locker and left the school. Just like Karyn always did, Kyla was leaning against the school wall, waiting for Jon. When she spotted him coming out of the building, she ran over to him.
"Hey, Jon."
He turned around. "Oh. Hi."
"Still depressed?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah."
"Well, I know what will cheer you up," she said, smiling.
"What's that?"
She leaned in and kissed him on his lips. Jon stumbled backwards, breaking the kiss. Kyla looked shocked and confused. "What? What's wrong?"
"Why ... why did you do that?"
"Because I'm your girlfriend. That's what girlfriends do."
"You're my girlfriend?" Jon didn't hate Kyla, but there was only one person that he wanted to be with and it wasn't her. It was Karyn. He felt that if he even just humored Kyla, it would be as if he was cheating on his chance with Karyn, the normal Karyn.
"Jon, what's wrong with you?"
Jon took a few more steps back and then turned and ran.
"Jon! What's wrong?!" she yelled from behind him.
He ran all the way home.
