As Jon walked to the lunch room, he was met halfway by Zoe. "Hey, Jon," she said, smiling. Jon still couldn't get used to that.
"Hi, Zoe."
They walked the rest of the way until they got in line to get their lunch. Nothing seemed really out of the ordinary (except for Zoe having a "bubbly" attitude, which wasn't at all bad), but it became fairly obvious when they entered the eating area.
There weren't designated seats in the lunch room, but it was clear where certain people sat. There were the tables for the "popular" people (like the cheerleaders and jocks), there were the tables for the science and band geeks, and in a corner at the back of the room there were tables for the loners and Goths. All the other tables were filled with everyone else.
As Jon and Zoe walked to their seats, Jon saw Kyla standing near the "popular" tables. She was kissing Biff Meadows (the school football captain), and Biff was feeling her up. She apparently was fine with that. She really is a slut, Jon thought. They couldn't do that later?
On the other side of the room, he saw Karyn snorting with laughter at the geeks' table. Well, at least she seemed to be having a good time.
And at the back of the room, Jon saw Sarah eating with her Goth friends Stephanie and Sabrina. They huddled together, trying to ignore the people around them. Occasionally, when people walked by, Sarah lifted her head slightly and shot them a dirty glance.
It was like the scene Jon always saw when he entered the lunch room with Karyn, except now some of the people were different. Four people, to be exact.
"Jon? What's wrong?" Zoe asked, breaking Jon out of his observations and thoughts.
"Huh?" He hadn't even realized that he was just standing there. "Um, nothing. I'm fine." He continued to the table and sat down.
"You've seemed distracted all day," Zoe said.
"I'm fine. Really."
Zoe shrugged and smiled. "Okay." Then she began to eat.
