Mikey went back to Deerfield, and got back to work keeping his GPA high with his study group. Econ was a fun class, and easy compared to math.
Baseball was a total home run. His softball reflexes were sharp and translated well. The only thing that didn't help was his pitching in softball was much different, so he was a different position, first base. He was on the varsity team as a freshman, with Caleb who played second base. After the first 3 wins, there was a joke on the team that if Mikey didn't get the out, Caleb would, so there was no need for a third baseman. They beat Choate in the 4th game 4-0. The other few games were very handily won. The coach was excited for the next few years.
About 2 weeks before the end of the school year, Penny asked where Mikey got the necklace, and he said from his girlfriend. Penny then asked where she got it, and he replied a church rummage sale. Penny looked at him and paused a second in thought, then asked where did that person get it. Mikey told Penny Greece, he thought. Penny thought about this for a moment, and asked Mikey to meet her in her room the last weekend.
The last Sunday of the year, Mikey went to the girls only dorm and signed in. He went to Penny's room, realizing they never went to her room. They met at a room in the library, or sometimes one of the guy's room. Penny let Mikey in before he knocked and pulled out a rolling chair for him as she sat on the bed. He looked around the room. He saw a Sailor Moon poster next to one of Tesla. There was a third one of the Chakras.
"I wanted to talk to you about magic," declared Penny
"What?"
"I think your necklace is magic."
"Where is that coming from?"
"I can sense magic and spirits. I was able to do it since I got really sick when I was about 7. I sense spirits all the time, in old houses and graveyards, so I am used to that sensation, but I'm not as used to the tingle of magic. It's almost like indigestion, but more pleasant. Anyway, I've felt it only a couple times before. When I was 11, there was a magician that did some truly amazing things at my birthday party. levitation, pyrokinesis and even some minor transformation."
"That could just be.."
"Mikey, please let me finish. There was no way some of those things could happen. He took a soda can from the audience and put it on the ground in a place we chose, over the concrete of the swimming pool. He stepped back and snapped his fingers, and it was a brass statute of the Eiffel tower. The other time was last year, when I walked by medicine man's house on a reservation where my family volunteers every summer. There were legends of this man being alive for centuries and giving miracle cures. Whenever I went inside, I got the feeling. He wouldn't answer my questions, just stare into my eyes and soul. I went to the nearby town with my dad and found pictures of him going back decades, looking the same. I couldn't find much else, except the local hospital would occasionally have patients that would recover from stuff they shouldn't have. And now I get it from your necklace."
"That's cool Penny, but my necklace is just a necklace."
Penny stared at Mikey for a minute, and Mikey stared back starting to feel uncomfortable.
"Mikey, maybe you don't want to let me know, but I know something is up. I felt it every time we studied together. I didn't get anything form Caleb. I'm your friend Mikey, please tell me."
Mikey thought for a minute then said, "I'd like to invite you to my home this summer."
"But I live in North Carolina."
"You can spend a couple nights, we have extra rooms and I'm sure my parents will be cool with it. We can talk more then. I just need to talk to some people about it first."
"Ok Mikey, I'll talk to my parents and arrange a trip up. Maybe my family will take a trip to your part of the country."
"Just make sure it isn't during my time in Japan. My family is going for 2 weeks in July."
The two made small talk until visiting time was up. Mikey texted Diane that he met someone that may be able to sense magic and she had suspicions about the necklace, so he invited her to their town. Diane replied that it could be good to have a friend like her, maybe they could find other magic.
Jon went to his room to finish up his homework for the last week, which flew by. He was on his ride home and looking forward to his summer.
