Karyn took her seat in history class and waited along with her fellow classmates for the teacher to arrive. She didn’t have to wait too long as their teacher, Mr. Lambert, entered the classroom with a few other students who were hurrying to their seats trying not to be late.
“Good morning, class,” Mr. Lambert began. He started to go through the plan for the lesson but was interrupted by two of his pupils making their usual late entrance. Only this entrance wasn’t quite as normal.
“Leave me alone, Sarah,” Biff Meadows, the school quarterback, moaned at his girlfriend, Sarah McMillan. Karyn looked up briefly and then returned to her doodling. Sarah and Biff had more drama than anyone else in the school. It was only spring and they had already broken up twice. So to Karyn, this wasn’t anything new.
“Seriously, babe?” Sarah asked, sounding confused. “What’s wrong with you today? You’re not normally this grumpy.” Sarah reached out to place her hand on Biff’s shoulder, but this seemed to be the final straw, as Biff shrugged her off and spun around.
“I said, leave me fucking alone!” he shouted, causing the whole class to gasp and look up. Sarah took a step back and looked scared.
Mr. Lambert took this as his cue to step in. He coughed and stepped toward the couple.
“That’s enough, Mr. Meadows! I think that you need some time in detention to cool down. See me after class.”
Biff stared at Mr. Lambert and opened his mouth to argue, but he then thought against it and instead turned to glare at Sarah, as if to say, Now look at what you’ve done.
Karyn watched this exchange with amazement. Sure, Biff was a bully, and he usually got detention because of his behaviour towards his classmates, but Karyn couldn’t recall a time where he got detention because he swore—let alone at Sarah.
Could this be considered interesting enough to be related to Jon’s wish...or perhaps there was just trouble in paradise?
As Biff and Sarah barged past Karyn towards their seats, Karyn noticed Biff rubbing his head gently.
