Jon sighed with relief after he grabbed the fence plank and easily moved it aside. A moment later, he was on the sidewalk that ran between the road and the fence. He peered over the top of the wood fence and watched as Karyn's mother walked out of the house and towards the giant playhouse that was constructed for her daughter.
"Karyn? Honey, what's wrong?" she asked, getting concerned.
"Mommy! There was a strange boy here. He knew my name," Karyn said, breaking down into tears.
"There was a stranger in the backyard?" she asked her daughter.
Karyn nodded, then continued to cry.
Jon turned away from the fence, feeling a little rotten that he had hurt Karyn so much, just by meeting her for a few seconds. He suddenly felt that maybe his wish to swap her personality with Sally's wasn't such a good idea after all. In her current state, Karyn seemed mentally challenged, if anything. Perhaps he should have done that to someone like Sarah instead.
Now that he was thinking about the swap, he wondered how much his cousin Sally had changed. He decided to pay her a visit. His Aunt Sharon lived in a house on the other side of town. It wasn't very big, but it was only the two of them.
