The pilot has given the general inference that Karyn is the careless one, and i don't mean clumsy or absent minded. I mean the type that would pass the blame/buck to someone else if things didn't go their way.
Couple that with the fact that it's Jon's rock, it's a sort of subtle inference in the mind that Jon is partially to blame for letting his oldest friend hold onto something so powerful when he should know how she is.
So to summarize, Projection by Karyn because she seems like the person to do it, and a sense of moral responsibility on Jon's part.
Don't think i've ever read branches that deliberately place the direct blame on Jon though.
