"Why did it work?" Jon muttered to himself, thinking about how his wish had changed reality so that his grandfather's life took a different path. The wishing stone was only supposed to affect reality within a radius of a few miles. His grandfather was obviously outside of that range. He began to wonder if maybe he was missing a variable. Athena was most likely a witch in the previous reality, so perhaps there was something about her that skewed or magnified the power of the wishing stone. He thought harder about the few times that he had seen her and suddenly he remembered something. Athena always wore a crystal pendant necklace. Jon always thought it was just for aesthetic reasons, but now he began to wonder if maybe it had magical properties. Perhaps it protected her. Or maybe it was used to focus her psychic energy. "That's weird," Jon muttered to himself. "How did I know that?"
"Did you say something?" Zoe asked.
Jon turned and looked around his room. "Zoe, have you seen a crystal pendant around here?" He wasn't wearing it, even though Athena always did in the previous reality.
"Crystal pendant? Is that something you got from The Occult Stop?"
It was obvious that Zoe didn't know what he was talking about. She seemed as dumbfounded as when he asked her about the stone.
Perhaps the pendant didn't swap with Athena's personality because it wasn't bought in the store or something like that. Perhaps it was a hand-me-down, something she got from her parents or grandparents. Suddenly, Jon felt like he needed that pendant. He wasn't sure if he could use it to get the stone, but he felt like it might help.
"Zoe, do you know Athena DeVries?" Jon asked.
"No. Should I?"
Of course, Zoe wouldn't know. They weren't friends in this reality, despite the fact that they went to the same school.
Jon didn't know where Athena lived. But he did know where Karyn lived. And assuming that Karyn was friends with Athena in this new reality, Karyn's house was probably the best way to get to Athena.
