Jon walked upstairs to find that the door to his parents' room was shut. He gave the door his usual "dinner's ready" knock (it was a quick little 5-knock syncopated bit--dun-da-da-dun-dun) that he used to give Zoe, wondering if his mom would recognize it.
He waited a few seconds with no response and as he was about to knock again, he heard his mom call out "Yeah, ok. I'm coming. Be down in a minute."
Smirking, Jon went back downstairs and sat with his dad and sister. They had been disucssing each other's days. Jon fixed himself a plate and a minute later his mom came down to the table. She had changed her clothing slightly, swapping out her torn black skirt for a similar shorter one that allowed her to show more leg. She had also done her hair. Jon figured that she was probably going to head out to Zoe's favorite club after dinnner (although Zoe would have killed to have been able to go there on a schoolnight).
They ate for a few minutes, and then Jon's dad looked over at his mom. "So, how was your day, honey?"
"Good," she said, without looking up from her food. "Got a new skull down at the Occult Stop."
"Oh, that's nice," Jon's dad said, trying to feign interest. "You going out again tonight?"
"Yeah. Don't wait up."
After a few more minutes of silence (Jon made a mental note to find out how his mom and dad could have ever gotten together like this), Jon's mom had cleaned her plate. "Thanks, Zoe," she said, dropping it in the sink. Then she grabbed her black canvas backpack off the couch and ran out the door.
Jon briefly wondered if he should follow her or if he should just stay home. Then again, he supposed he could do both, and he was in no rush to run out right after dinnner.
