Jon walked into his house, confused from the date. He had enjoyed the movie, but wasn't sure how he felt about touching Kevin's penis. Part of his was excited to have a sexual experience, but part of him felt he should have touched a girl's parts, not a boy's parts. He made it was to the kitchen and opened the fridge door when his mom came in. She saw what he was wearing and did a doubletake and took a deep breath before she asked, "How'd it go?"
"What go?" asked Jon as he put down the gallon of milk he had just drank out of.
"The date, your new friend Sarah told me you were going out to a movie."
"Right, that. The movie was good."
"Anything else you want to tell me?" asked Jon's mom looking him up and down. Jon all of a sudden remembered what he was wearing.
"Sarah lent me some of her clothing. I'm going to get it off soon. I'd rather be in my usual shorts," said Jon walking off.
"Well I think the outfit looks cute. Your hair looks nice too. Was Kevin at least nice?"
"...How'd you know it was with Kevin?"
"Sarah told me when she dropped off the clothing she got for you."
"Kevin was fine. I'm not sure if I'll go out with him again though," said Jon
"Why?"
"Because I don't know how I feel about him. I'm a guy, he's a guy..."
"Nothing wrong with that Jon. Just think about it."
Jon turned around and went upstairs. He took off the skirt, pink shirt and shoes and put them into the bags that Sarah bought. He put his rock on the bed and took the bags to put them in the back of the closet, wondering if he could sell it all on Craigslist. He saw a few schoolgirl outfits in his otherwise male closet. Great, another reminder of a wish gone awry.
He put one his pairs of shorts and sat on his bed, thinking about the afternoon.
"Kevin was nice. If Kevin were a girl, would I have reached where I did? What if I were the girl? He thought I was. Would he have let me if he knew I was a guy. This is so frustrating."
Jon rolled over onto his stomach.
"I was attracted to Sarah before this, so I'm not strictly gay. At least I was before I changed into...this." Jon grabbed his long blond hair and played with it a bit while he kept thinking.
After a few more minutes of turning over thoughts on his own, his mom walked in.
"Jon, you seem a bit upset, maybe I can help?"
"I'm not sure you can mom."
"I remember when I started dating in high school. It's a confusing time."
"Moreso than you think mom."
"I did date a girl in high school for a few weeks."
Jon sat up and stared at his mom, unblinking.
"I didn't tell you because I wasn't sure if it mattered. She was a great girl named Leslie. We went to a few movies and talked about books we liked. She was really a funny girl, quick with a pun. It was the 90s, so there was still a little stigma about it. Your grandpa wasn't a fan. Eventually, we stopped dating. After that, I only dated a few boys before I met your father, but Leslie has a special place in my heart. I love your father, and having our family. Sometimes your heart needs what your heart needs."
Jon's mom stood up and went to the door. "Honey, just talk to me if you want, ok?" and she left
Jon thought about it for a bit. His mom, as usual, was right. But, he had to know how certain dates would play out.
"I wish I knew how that date would have gone if Kevin were a girl."
Jon's mom heard the wish, sighed, and thought "Grant the wish"
Jon's afternoon was exactly the same, except that Kayla told Jon that he could touch her breasts if he wanted to. Jon felt no different about how the afternoon went.
