Jon looked at the time on his phone. His free period would be over in about half an hour. How many more girls -and women - could he look up before he had to put away his phone and go back inside for classes? Maybe thirty if he spent one minute per entry ...

Jon realized it might be more efficient if he got the stone to generate a massive data file containing entries on all of the changed people. Including males. Like Biff who had signed his yearbook.

Speaking of which ... Jon looked up and recognized the Taylor twins from his yearbook. Jackie and Melony Taylor were sitting across from him, talking to each other. He could use the app to eavesdrop on their conversation. Nah, better to use the app to get some basic data on them first.

Blonde, blue-eyed Jackie was hard to recognize because she used to be Yuki Meshida. Some students called her "Yukio" after Mishima from World Lit class, but that was a boys' name. Except in X-Men where Chris Claremont gave that name to a female character for some reason.

Jon recalled Samantha's joke about a "Sisterhood of Evil Mutants" and her Dr. Manhattan reference (not X-Men related, but still comics). She probably also knew who Yukio in the comics was. At least for the next three hours or so, unless she stepped off school grounds.

Jon considered meeting her after school and taking her off campus - but where? - so that she wouldn't be affected at 3:47. Another day with her would be nice. But that would mean trapping somebody in the role of the principal's secretary another day. Consequences. This week was all about them.

Jon continued reading Jackie Taylor's entry to see what the consequences were for her. Jackie was in theater and band like Jennifer Taylor but hadn't inherited Jennifer's outgoing personality. Jackie was shy off stage but got into her roles on stage and into whatever song she was playing.

Conversely, her twin Melony wore a preppy girl's suit like inherited Sarah Taylor but hadn't inherited Sarah's serious personality. The original Melony's personality was outgoing like Jennifer's and hadn't changed despite new genes that had not only changed her race but made her into a physical duplicate of Jackie.

The body language of the two girls was still completely different, though. Jon could see that by watching them in person. Jackie was more controlled, and Melony was more animated.

Moreover, Jon noticed that the two girls had maintained their distinct original hairstyles. Jackie's blonde hair was long and straight like Yuki's, and Melony Taylor's blonde hair was shoulder-length and curly like Melony Tyne's. Or at least as curly as European hair could be.

Jon realized that the racial changes caused by the stone were like translation: converting features of one race to the closest possible equivalents in another, constrained by the genes of the altered female's new parents. At least in the case of the Taylor twins. Jackie's face shape and proportions were roughly the same as Yuki's, even though her coloration was now completely different. Similarly, Angela Washington still had Angela Getherd's cheekbones despite being much darker. The Asian lunch lady presumably retained some features from her former - probably white - idenity. Jon would look her up if only he knew her name.

He found it by looking in the bio for Karyn Wilmingham which named her friends Gladys Myers and Yuki "Yukio" Tanaka. Another female named "Yukio" in the same school? What were the odds of that? Each name had a hyperlink. Jon pressed "Yuki 'Yukio' Tanaka" and learned she had been Zoe's chubby classmate Victoria O. Monaghan. Victoria O. Vicki O. Flip the V and I around. I V. Change the V to U. I U. Pronounce them as in Japanese. "Ee oo." Really fast together. "Yoo." "Yu." Yukio. Japanese didn't have middle names, so Victoria's middle initial had to go somewhere: on her American nickname, again based on the name of the one Japanese writer Americans might know.

Jon wondered if Zoe had taken Victoria's place on Tuesday. He typed "Zoe Brewer" - it disturbed him that he was getting used to the idea of his sister being a Brewer - and tapped on "Tuesday." Yes, the fat Zoe he had seen yesteday was Zoe Monaghan. Zoe Monaghan's notebook and glasses were once Vicki's. "Yukio" Tanaka wore the same glasses as Zoe had yesterday! The Japanized Vicki had gotten her glasses back! And as Yukio, Vicki even got her notebook back. Her bio said she was a compulsive diarist who jotted down everything she served. Jon couldn't remember what he had picked at random for lunch which was only an hour ago.

Nor could he remember anyone before the swaps began with Julie Madison's red hair and a bob cut - features that both Julie Santiago and Linda Madison lacked. No, wait, Jon's late grandfather was a redhead. His brunette daughter Linda Madison didn't inherit his red hair, but his daughter Julie Madison did - and Jon and Mikey inherited that hair from Julie. Susan Madison hadn't; she got her blonde hair from her father's side of the family.

Julie Madison's bob cut seemed random, though. Could it have been carried over from whoever she was until 3:47 yesterday?

Jon searched for Julie Santiago, selected the "Tuesday" option, and discovered that on the first day of his wish, she had become ...
