Jon and Karyn were suddenly standing half a block away. When Jon looked at Karyn she was wearing dark clothing similar to what the Goths were wearing, but not exactly like any of them. Meanwhile instead of Jon and Karyn were three girls wearing ordinary clothing.
"I guess I shouldn't have used so much power," said Jon. "But it seemed to work. We're in their roles."
"Hey, where are you three going?" said Zoe.
"Us three?" replied Jon.
"Yeah. You three. You and Karyn."
"Huh?" said Karyn.
"I get it," said Jon. "We're two people, but we took the role of three people. We didn't turn into three people, but everyone's going to treat is as if we're three people.
"What if we separate?" wondered Karyn. "They can't treat us as 1 1/2 people each."
"No, but they might talk to one of us as if he or she is the third person and not realize they were talking to them as the second person a minute ago. Or they could act as though two people are doing something as long as one is, like if you went to bed, maybe Athena and Zelda's parents would both act as though their daughter went to bed. Maybe they just treat one of us as two people with an unusual condition that prevents them from living in separate houses or something."
"What are you talking about?" replied Athena and Zelda, in unison.
"Tell me," said Jon. "How many of you are there?"
"I don't get it," said Athena and Zelda together. "Two of us. Zoe and me."
"That's right," said Zoe. "Two of us. Me and Athena-and-Zelda." She spoke that last part together almost as if it was one word.
