Zoe was sure they wouldn't find her, but she still felt hurried enough that her finger slipped and ended up pressing ERASE and when she realized what she had done, she accidentally pulling the trigger. "Fuck." A different-colored beam of light shot out from the device, then turned and hit Zoe right in the face. Then ... she felt strange.
"I thought I heard someone say something from back there," Karyn said a minute later, pointing towards the back wall of the laundry room.
Jon walked over to the spot and moved some laundry baskets out of the way. He had no idea, but apparently there was a cubbyhole in the wall. And sitting within it was his sister Zoe. But there was something wrong with her.
"Zoe? Are you okay?" Jon asked.
"I'm fine," she said, with a monotone voice. There was absolutely no feeling in that voice. There were computer voices that had more life to them.
"Jon, what's wrong with her?" Karyn asked. "She's almost like a zombie."
Jon reached down and effortlessly took the device from her. Apparently, she didn't care that he took it. In fact, it seemed like she didn't care about anything.
He looked at the screen and saw the words ERASURE COMPLETE. Then he looked at Karyn. "I ... I think she just erased her own personality. All of her personality."
"Why would she do that?" Karyn asked.
"Maybe it was an accident."
"Well, what do we do with her now?" Karyn asked.
They both looked down at Zoe. Yes, she was a lot calmer now. But that was because she had no personality. She was no better than a robot made of flesh and blood. Memory, intelligence, and experience ... but no personality to make her seem alive.
