"Maybe we should try it on ourselves," Karyn suggested.
"You want to erase parts of our personalities?" Jon asked.
"No. You said that the device can scan minds, right? Well, try that function on us. It's harmless, right?" she asked.
"Yeah, okay." He turned the device towards Karyn and touched the screen on the device. The READY changed to SCAN. Then he pulled the trigger.
A beam of hazy blue light swept Karyn's head back and forth for a second or two, then stopped. On the screen, it said KARYN BLACK'S TRAITS SCANNED. Then beneath it was a question: VIEW TRAITS?
Jon shrugged, then touched the screen where it asked the question. Immediately, the screen was filled with a list of different things. They were Karyn's personality traits.
"Well? Did it work?" Karyn asked.
"Yeah. It did. I'm looking at your personality traits right now. And there's a lot of them," he said, scrolling down through the list.
"Really? I didn't think my personality was all that complicated."
"Yeah, but this is more than just how you feel and how you act. There's also your preferences ... what you like and what you don't like. Your worst fears and your greatest aspirations. All of these things define who you are." Jon continued looking through the list, amazed at all the things he was seeing. Most of these things he already knew, but there were some that he didn't. Personal tastes, that sort of thing. Things that Karyn kept to herself but were crucial in making her uniquely her. At the bottom of the list were three questions. One was: ERASE? The second one was: CLONE? And the third one was RETURN TO SCAN MODE?
"Okay, now it's your turn," Karyn said. "Give me the device and I'll scan you."
