Prisoner Jon was starting on his second burger. He was sitting in the food court of the mini-mall. "You are absolutely sure he was with me?" DTH Karyn asked. She had recently returned to the food court with Athena. Prisoner Jon had informed them that they had went to track down Zoe who had been dragged away by Athena.
He nodded while chewing on a mouthful of burger. Athena looked at the meat in his hands with great disdain. "What I mean is, he knew it wasn't me?" Karyn asked while pointing at herself. Jon swallowed the mouthful of meat.
"I think so. This is all still new to me, magic and travelling to different dimensions. There are like people who are the same but different. It's really weird." He said before he took another bite. Now he was no longer overwhelmingly hungry, he was taking the time to think about what was going on around him.
"I guess he had his reasons." Athena said.
"I guess." It was making Karyn feel a little insecure. She wasn't doing a very good job of hiding the fact.
"You don't think Jon's going to abandon you do you?" Athena asked.
"I don't think he'd do that." Karyn told her. It did get her a bit worried though, what if they had an argument or a disagreement. It was possible that he could ditch her and go running off when any other number of Karyn's he hadn't pissed off. It was something she was going to have to discuss with him at some point when he came back. "No, it's too messy for him. I don't think he'd be happy leaving extra versions of people in the same reality, if it could be avoided."
"He told you that?"
"Not directly but we decided early on we'd help displaced version of ourselves get back to their own dimensions when we could. I'm sure that applies to anyone we take with us too. Not to mention the fact that he's never abandoned me before, no matter what crazy stuff he's been through."
"I'm not sure I'd trust him." Athena said.
"Well, you are the expert on betraying trust." Athena scowled. "I just want to remind you that you are here because we chose to save your life. Don't think it's out of friendship or loyalty." Karyn reminded her.
"Okay, you see it as betrayal but I had my reasons. The stone was too important." Athena said defending her actions.
Karyn sighed. "You still feel that way don't you? Even though your compulsion to have the stone nearly got you and a lot of other people killed."
"If it wasn't for me you wouldn't have got the DTH back and we all survived didn't we?"
"What about Biff and Sarah?" Karyn asked. Athena folded her arms.
"You can't blame me for what happened to them." Athena's raised voice caused Jon to look at her, being momentarily distracted from his burger.
"If you hadn't betrayed Zoe's trust Sarah would have been unaware of the stone and not destroyed herself. It's worse though, her mistake may even obliterate your world. You and Zoe could be interdimensional refugees now, if that wormhole never stops sucking in material. What good will your stone be then?"
Athena smiled. "I thought about this. The DTH can time travel, right? Jon can take us back into the past before any of that stuff happened, then we stop it from happening. Problem solved." Karyn shook her head.
"You think your so clever don't you? The DTH doesn't work like that. It can time travel but if we go back to before the wormhole happens there will still be a version of both you and Zoe there already. So how's that going to work? You going to hang out with your other self? Tell her not to betray Zoe to stop it all happening again? Knowing how obsessed you are with the stone, do you think she'd do that?"
"She might." Athena said rather unconvincingly.
"What about Zoe, she'll tell her other self about how you betrayed her so you could get her stone. What sort of wishes do you think you'd be subject to then? I can't imagine they'd be very nice." Karyn said. Athena's face dropped.
"What will you do with me?" She asked in a quiet voice.
"We'll worry about that later. Right now we have to get everyone back together again." She pulled out her own phone from her bag.
