It turned out that it was Sarah. And when Karyn pulled the trigger of the strange-looking gun, Sarah's body propelled backwards and fell to the floor, as if she were hit by some invisible object. Jon watched as Karyn's appearance (that was, her make-up and clothes) changed, becoming more in the likeness of Sarah. And at the same time, Sarah's appearance changed, becoming more in the likeness of Karyn. She was even wearing a baggy green sweater, just like Karyn was wearing that day.
Karyn looked down at herself. "Like, look at me, Jon. Even my outfit changed."
Jon thought that the device would only have a mental effect on the people changed, not a physical one as well. Karyn looked like someone from the popular crowd. And slowly she began to act like someone from the popular crowd as well.
Karyn looked down at Sarah and then at Jon, with contempt. Why was she hanging around these losers? She could be doing something more important, like shopping or getting her nails done.
Karyn shook her head. What am I saying? she thought. Jon's my friend. He's not a loser. But she now had Sarah's personality, which was forcing her to see things the way Sarah saw things. She still had her memories, but her new preppy bitch attitude was overpowering them. She began to hate her old life and didn't want to have it back.
Jon was amazed by the rate of transition. In only about a minute, Karyn had gone from his best friend to a ditzy bitch.
Karyn gave Jon the device back.
"What are you doing?" Jon asked. "You have to be the one holding the device to switch back."
"I'm not switching back."
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm not going back to being a loser again." She turned around, about to walk away, but Jon grabbed her arm. She glared back at him. "Get your hand off of me, you twerp."
Jon let her go. It was almost like it was Sarah who was talking to him.
Behind him came a groan. He turned around and saw Sarah, sitting up and grabbing her head. "What happened?" she asked.
