Samantha tried to contain her anger because she knew it would do no good to blame herself or her squire for what had happened to them. There was always risk in battle even when you had a heavy advantage in a fight the trick was going after every chance you got. An opportunity to escape was likely to appear if she watched for it, and it was very important because once they got to the wizard things would become much more difficult.
The paladin wasn’t sure what plans the slavers had in store from them at the wizard’s place but she was sure she didn’t want to find out, because there were many tricks a magic user could use to enforce compliance. She shuddered at the thought of being under the control of the slave collars she had seen in her travels to other countries. Breaking the control would of them would be nearly impossible and even if one of her friends was able to free her from the collar it often took years of healing before the person was able to be truly free of the effects of the collar.
Albert was up and moving though very battered and bruised from his confrontation with the slavers. He was trying to comfort the three women who resided in the cage with them. Samantha left him to the task of getting them into a better state of mind to try and escape while she searched the cage for vulnerabilities. She had always felt more comfortable fighting enemies than dealing with people. She wished she was better with other people but she wouldn’t dwell on it when people were depending on her.
It was good question about who the wizard was because that would likely tell what the fate for them was going to be. Samantha debated trying to figure out who it was later in order to bring them to justice. She looked at the fear on the faces of her companions and decided she could only depend on Albert because he was the only trained fighter in the cage. She moved to the back of the cage and waved Albert over to her.
“Will they be able to run when the time comes?” Samantha asked.
“I think so but I don’t think they will scatter like we would want them to,” Albert explained. “They feel safer as a group. Did you discover any weaknesses or weapons we can use?”
Samantha shook her head.” Our best weapons are the chains and they are awkward to use. I think our best bet is for you to slam the door open and I will jump on the big guy and distract him and with your help we will finish him off. The girls will run causing the second guy to case them and we will take him out when we are done with the big guy. I want to be clear to you that it is not likely we will be successful at an escape but it is something I think we have to try.”
Albert nodded glumly.
