When they got to the restaurant parking lot, they met up with Jason Knight and Tyler Jackson. They had just eaten and were leaving. Jason was the high school track star and Tyler was the high school's best basketball player. They were friends.
They only knew Jon and Karyn in passing from school. Jon supposed that people like him and Karyn just didn't fit in with the jocks. But this time, they stopped and said something. But, really, it was because of what Jon was holding: the personality manipulator.
"What's that?" Jason asked. "Some sort of a suped-up water gun?" He was trying to be funny.
"No. It's a device that changes people's personalities."
"Yeah, right. Whatever, dude," Tyler said.
They walked past, but then stopped when Jason noticed the viewscreen. It had a bunch of personality traits listed on the screen. He turned around and grabbed it from Jon.
"Hey!" Jon yelled out. "Give that back!"
But instead, Jason touched something on the screen and then pulled the trigger. Karyn got hit! Jason was just fooling around. He had no idea that the device really did exactly what Jon said it did.
There was a high-pitched noise that came from the device. After the sound stopped, Jon, Tyler, and Jason all stared at what had become of Karyn.
