She looked horrified and furious for a moment...before clearing her throat and saying in the officious tones of a school matron "Don't stutter, child! It's very rude to stand before an adult, gaping and blathering like that. I always thought of you as one of the libraries more intelligent patrons."
She looked at him through her new glasses, obviously unaware of her changes. She looked officious and snooty as she frowned at him. Her whole attitude having changed from the sexy, "Hot for Teacher" vixen she'd been, to a fussy, frumpy drab. She now reminded him of "Miss Hathaway" from the Beverly Hillbillies, only more so.
"I...I'm sorry Ms. Fry..."
"Mrs. Fry, Jonathan. I am a married lady, and there for am to be called Mrs. Fry."
Becky Fry (or, as her nametag now identified her - "Assistant Head Librarian Rebecca Fry") had married her highschool sweetheart, and Donny Fry often stopped by and snuggled his hot wife, and the sight of the two of them as they snuggled and giggled between the stacks was common enough. Jon wondered what this change had done to her relationship with her husband...
And soon that was answered, as Donny Fry came up the steps and noticed his wife. For a momant, he too looked shocked and confused...before smiling and coming up to his wife and slipping an arm around her bony waist. Obviously, he was still married and in love with her, and she with him. She smiled, her overbite becoming more obvious as they kissed, but she then said "Now, Donald...I can't be doing this durring Library hours. Can't be allowed, don't you know. Not proper at all. I'll be home by six, and we can romp about the bedroom for a while then, but right now...business."
Donny looked puzzled, then smiled as he realized this HAD been a bit out of the ordinary. After all, his horse-faced, officious and competent wife NEVER allowed any play at work. He blushed, and stapped back, saying "Uh, sorry doll. But...you know...I think of you all day..."
Rebecca Fry softened a moment, then smiled and took him in her arms. "Oh, Romeo...you are SUCH a romantic little dear. I sometimes wonder how such disparate personalities as we ever became a couple. Well...I love you. I've always loved you, ever since I tutored you in high school and collage. But...well...the rules..."
Jon stepped up, fascinated that the change in personality and appearance hadn't affected the previous relationship. Party Boy Donny was still in love with and devoted the now fussy, frumpy librarian he was married too, and Rebecca Fry was obviously in love with her handsome, vapid husband. He wondered...how would that work in other situations. If the Captain of the Football team became the gawky, skinny Captain of the Chess team, would his cheerleader girlfriend still be in love with him? Would she follow him around, protecting him from bullies and go to Sci-Fi Conventions with him? If the head Cheerleader was turned into an obese, slovenly Comic Book Geek, would her handsome, football player boyfriend still be in love with her?
"It's okay, Mrs. Fry. I'll keep an eye on the front desk, if you and your husband want to go into the back room and...talk."
And off they went, a happy - if very different - couple. Jon stepped behind the desk (he was a library volunteer, and knew how to run the computer) and decided to test his theory out. He handled the customers as the came, but watched for the trendiest, most un-geeky people...wanting to find just the right subjects...
