Derek's wife (her name was Teri) turned around to face Wallace. "Don't fight it," she said to him. "In a few minutes, you'll want to be this way."
Wallace backed away from the freakish woman. He didn't know what to do. He knew that she was right. Soon, he would accept his new gothic self and he would like dressing and looking like a freak.
The authorities that had been made aware of this epidemic had noticed the steps of conversion in several people that had fallen victim to the signal. The first was confusion and shock. The second was denial. The third was confliction, as their minds aligned with their new personality. And the fourth was complete acceptance.
Wallace was at step two. But he could feel dark thoughts entering his mind. Step three wasn't too far away. In another minute, maybe two, he would rather be a Goth than what he was before the change.
No! I have to fight this! he screamed in his head.
But it was no use. He began to feel okay about his appearance. And he found the woman, that stood before him, to be increasingly sexy, not freakish.
And, just like he had thought, after another minute and a half, Wallace had totally become a Goth. And so had Sam.
They let Derek and Teri leave in their car and got back into their police car.
They were so disgusted that they had been cops before. They hated cops.
Wallace looked over at Sam. He smiled and said "You look good."
Sam smiled back. "Thanks."
Sam started the car and drove back out onto the highway.
In the sky above them, a helicopter hovered. In it, a man watched over the scene with binoculars.
