As Derek sat there in his idling car, new thoughts began to invade his mind, dark and rebellious thoughts. And similiar thoughts entered his wife and kids' minds too. First, they didn't mind how they now looked, then they liked it.
And by the time the two cops came walking up each side of the car, Derek and his family had completely converted into Goths.
The cop on the driver's side knocked on the window. Derek rolled it down and looked at the cop. The cop looked down at him, then immediately took out his cellphone. "This is Feldman. We've got more of 'em." Then he put the phone away. Derek noticed that he was wearing earphones, presumably to keep him from hearing the signal coming from the radio.
"Sir, would you please turn off your radio," the cop said.
And then Derek did something that he had never done before. Before his change, he respected authority, he was a good citizen. But now, he hated authority. Especially cops.
"Fuck you," he said to the cop.
The cop couldn't hear him, because his ears were covered, but he could read his lips. He opened the door and yanked Derek out. Then he unlocked all the doors.
His partner opened the door on his side and pulled out Derek's wife. Her eyes burned with hatred. "Get your fucking hands off of me." She had never used such severe profanity in her life, but now it seemed natural.
The first cop leaned into the car and made sure the radio was off, then he and his partner took of their headphones.
"Now, what was it you two were saying?" he asked, pushing Derek against the side of the car.
The other cop did the same with Derek's wife.
