About an hour later, Larry came into Samantha's office. Usually, the lab was filled with people, but it was in the morning. At MTI, most lab workers came in after twelve and worked late into the night. So, for the next few hours, it was just Samantha, Larry, and Carrie.
"What is it?" she asked, sitting at her desk, doing paperwork.
"Come see for yourself," he said.
She got up and walked out into the lab with him. Carrie was writing down more lab results at her work area.
"Well?" Samantha asked.
"We don't know," Larry said.
"Know what?"
"What this thing is or how it works," he said, pointing at the device.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, first of all, it looks like it's electrical. Because of the view screen."
"Obviously," she said.
"Well, it's not. There's no power source. It's like the power is coming from nowhere."
"That's impossible. There has to be something."
"There isn't. There is nothing in this."
"What do you mean?"
"It's basically just a metal case in the shape of a gun. There are no working parts in it."
"But I saw it work."
"I don't know what to tell you. It's like it's magic or something."
Carrie looked up from her lab results and glared at him. "Larry."
"Sorry. I didn't mean to be smart again. It's just that there's nothing there to analyse."
"What if we tried it on someone?" Samantha suggested.
"Who?"
"Someone that will be very interested in this after we show her."
"Denise. Oh, Samantha, I don't think that's a good idea," Larry said.
Denise Brewster was the head of their department and also a few others. She was an important person in the company. Unfortunately, she was also a bitch that liked to flaunt her superiority over her employees. Samantha supposed that someone as sexy as her thought that she could do anything she wanted and get away with it.
"What if it doesn't work?" Larry asked. "You'll look like a fool."
"It will. I know it will."
