Whether it was a good idea or not, Jon wasn't sure. But he was glad it happened. The girl, who had just watched her mother get turned into a Goth, charged at Karyn, meaning to pull the device away from her.
But at the last moment, Karyn turned the device on the girl and fired.
"No!" Jon yelled out.
But it was too late. The girl was laying on the floor, dressed as a Goth. She squirmed around on the floor and dizzily sat up. She looked at herself in horror. "No," she whispered to herself.
Her mother smiled. "It's okay, Sydney. Everything's okay now," she said reassuringly. "Being Goth isn't so bad."
She looked up at her "new" mother with hurting eyes. She didn't want to become like her mother or the girl that shot her with that gun. She wanted to stay normal. But she could feel her "new" self trying to take over. She fought it. All the way to the end.
Karyn smiled, then looked over at Jon. But he wasn't there. He had apparently used the situation to run away.
After a few minutes, Sydney stopped crying. Karyn and Zoe helped her up. "Are you okay now?" Karyn asked.
"Yes," she said, with a smile. She didn't know why she was so afraid of being a Goth. Everything was fine. Just fine.
