Zoe pulled the trigger. The usual high-pitched sound eminated from the device, but it didn't hit its target. Jon had leapt out of the way ... again.
"Give me that fucking thing!" Karyn yelled. She grabbed it out of Zoe's hands. "I'll get him."
Zoe didn't like the fact that she no longer had the device. But she was okay with Karyn having it. It was plainly clear to Zoe that the "old" Karyn was gone. Sure, Karyn's memories were still intact, but Karyn clearly didn't want anything to do with her "old" life, and that included Jon.
She walked around the parked cars. "Where are you? You fucking asshole," she whispered to herself.
Jon was nearby. So nearby that he could hear her. It saddened him to hear her talk. She no longer even seemed like the Karyn he knew. It's like she was someone else.
Karyn wasn't making any sudden moves. So it was easy enough to evade her. But he couldn't evade her forever. Sooner or later, she'll give up and go into the mall with Zoe. He had to try to take the device from her before that happened.
He watched her through one of the car windows. She was heading in his direction.
