"Jon, I'm back from the beauty parlor!" Jon's mother's voice came to them from downstairs.
"Shit, she's home!" Jon's new voice took on a panicky tone. "I can't let her see me like this, close the door!"
Jon started to move toward the door, but Karyn held her back. "No, let's see what she thinks!"
They heard her coming up the stairs. "Jon, are you up here? Is Karyn still here? You both need to start getting ready for the Kanes' party, if you're not already!"
Jon's mother poked her head into the bedroom, and said, "Oh, hi, Karyn! Where's Jon? And who's your friend?"
Jon gave her mom an embarrassed wave. "Um, hi?" she squeaked.
Sheila Winters stepped fully into the room. She was already dressed to the nines. Black cocktail dress above the knee, high heels, hose, hair perfectly coiffed, sparkling jewelry, and gorgeous but not overdone makeup completed her look. Karyn wondered which salon she'd been to. She looked very good; whatever the salon had done had taken years off Mrs. Winters' apparent age.
Mrs. Winters was still waiting for an introduction that neither of them knew quite how to give. Karyn watched her eyes move from Jon, down to the "Make Me a Girl" kit still set up on the floor, then her eyes went back to Jon, and a look of recognition came over her face...
