"J-- Jon?" said Karyn. "W-- what did I do?"

"It's not your fault," said Jon. "It's the nightmare. I knew I could reverse it. It just took me a little while, that's all."

"I'm so sorry..." said Karyn.

"I am too," said Jon. "If I hadn't made that stupid machine, this would never have happened."

"I don't want things to be this way. I shouldn't have transformed Alan..."

"... and you shouldn't be Sarah's sister," said Jon. "But you are. But the first thing I have to do is help Alan."

"But you can't!" exclaimed Karyn. "Wishes aren't reversible."

"That's what I figured, too," said Jon. "But I wish I had the nightmare device with me. Also, I wish that Alan's nightmare was being Alan, just as he was before."

The device appeared... and Jon pointed it at Alan. "look, Karyn!" he said, showing her the screen. "It worked! Alan's nightmare is being Alan... which means I can change him back!"

Jon activated the device to produce Alan's nightmare and Alan transformed back to his normal self. (Fortunately, his nightmare didn't stay being Alan.)

"What?" he said.

"It's okay, Alan."

"It's okay? What's okay? Who are you?"

"I'm Jon."

"Jon, yeah, that's right. From third period English class. What am I doing here?"

"Alan, don't you remember? We were best friends."

"We were not!"

Jon looked to the stone. Something was wrong, and he'd have to find out what. "I wish I knew why Alan doesn't know me."

The answer came to him: Karyn was his best friend. When Karyn was changed, reality altered and he had to have a new best friend--a best friend who was someone he didn't even know before. Now Karyn was his friend again and Alan was back to like he was before... which meant he had never heard of Jon.

He could try wishing Alan was his friend again. Except that probably wouldn't work. He'd have to change reality so that Alan was his friend again, and he wasn't sure if he could change reality so that Alan and Karyn were both his friends. Maybe it was possible... but should he risk it? If not, was there another way?
