The two of them turned to face their mother who was standing just inside the hallway of their home. Susan greeted her mother with a “Hi mom.” Tom on the other merely nodded at her. “Sorry I am late I needed to pick something up on the way home,” Melissa told her children. She continued “I had a call from Miss Lyons on the way back tonight she wanted to thank you for helping her daughter out with her schoolwork. However, she has some bad news for you, Tom.”
Tom looked at his mother with wide eyes before asking. “What’s wrong I did everything I was meant to do. I wore this outfit all day just as I was supposed to.” He said pulling at the blazer he was wearing. “I know you did honey. I know you did. It seems that Tina got it wrong her teachers had told her the experiment was to last for at least seven days not one day.” Melissa informed her son who no matter what he did still looked like a schoolgirl just home from a day at school.
At this news, Tom’s face dropped. “What?” was all he could say. “Mom that doesn’t explain why you were late back tonight,” Susan asked her mother in that way that children can do without really asking a question.
“Oh, you are right dear I had to stop off at your school to get Tammy her new uniform. I mean she can’t wear yours all week. Melissa answered her daughter as she brought in to view the garment bag that she had carried from her car. This was the last straw for Tom almost as soon as he saw the uniform he ran out of the room and headed directly for his bedroom. When he arrived there, he closed the door with a slam that loud that his mother and sister could hear it in the hall where they were standing.
