Joy heard the car pull up behind her but didn't think anything about it until the officer told her to stop. She didn't, couldn't stop since she wasn't home yet.
"I said stop young lady!"
Joy turned around but continued to walk backward carefully. "I can't officer, I have to walk home and call my best friend. I promise I'll come with you after I do that."
The officer was astonished. This girl was completely defying him. She couldn't be more than 17 or 18, but she should be old enough to know better than to defy the police. "Now listen here! Just stop where you are now and I'll forget this little incident happened." Joy turned around and continued to walk. "Hey! Come back here!" The officer started running after her.
Joy heard him and tried to run, but she found herself unable to do anything but walk. She had to go home. She would go home. That was a wish, and that was impossible to prevent. Nothing this police officer did would stop that, but what would happen when she got home? The wish fulfilled, she would only have the compulsion to call Alison left.
A hand on her shoulder made her stop thinking, and she desperately wanted to stop walking, but no force on earth was going to stop her. She felt the officer tug on her shoulder to get her to turn around, and she twisted her body around so he wouldn't hurt her but kept walking.
"I... said... STOP!" He was obviously mad at this point, but she just shrugged his hand off her shoulder and continued to walk away. "Alright, I am placing you under arrest for failing to obey an officer of the law!"
"I'm sorry, Sir, but I HAVE to go home!"
"No, you have to come with me." He pulled out his handcuffs and attempted to grab her by the waist. He was nervous about handling a girl but he had no choice. But when he reached around her waist, first she accomodated him by lifting her arms, and then she started pulling him along. The surprise at her strength caused him to fall, and damnit, she just kept walking!
Joy sped up as much as she could, but all she was able to accomplish was to walk quickly. She still had to walk. At least she only had a block left before she got home.
The officer howled in rage and stood up. "I am going to handcuff you and then you are coming with me!" He caught up to her and grabbed her wrists. He was surprised when she didn't fight his attempt to handcuff her, but she wouldn't stop walking. Joy just started crying and wondered how she was going to call Alison handcuffed as she was.
"Now would you STOP walking PLEASE?!" He grabbed at the chain holding her cuffs together, but no matter how hard he pulled, or how much the cuffs dug into Joy's wrists, she managed to drag him along. "What in the hell is going on?"
"Look, Sir, sniff I am going to walk home and no one can stop me." Joy was crying and sniffling while she spoke. "Then I am going to somehow call my best friend, and no one can stop me. Once I do those two things, I will be able to go with you."
The officer let go of her and walked beside her. He was completely baffled by this girl's behavior, and even more baffled by her ability to ignore him like he wasn't even trying to stop her. "Where do you live?"
"At the end of this street."
"Ok then, I'll follow you since I don't seem to be able to stop you, but you WILL come with me."
"Yes, Sir." They walked on in silence until they reached Joy's front porch. "Um, Sir? Can you please open the door or take these handcuffs off?"
The officer opened the door and Joy stepped inside. Then Joy's mother walked in and froze in shock. "Joy Beth! What in the hell is going on?" Then she noticed Joy was handcuffed and the officer spoke.
"Ma'am, your daughter is under arrest for assault. She was involved in an attack on another girl down at the mall."
While the officer was talking Joy reached awkwardly for the phone, picked it up off the cradle and dialed Alison's phone number.
