Joy pointed the device towards Karyn when she was startled and accidentally pulled the trigger, and a breathtaking blue light engulfed her body.
When the light dissipated, she had become a boy. It was presumably what she (and probably Sarah, since they were twin sisters) would look like if she were born as a boy instead of a girl.
Karyn yelled out in horror. She was within five feet of the device, so she (or rather "he") still retained her own memories, from the previous reality. Then she fainted.
"For a moment there, I wasn't sure it would work," Alison commented.
"Why not?" Joy asked.
"Well, because wishes can't be reversed. Didn't you say she used the stone to become Sarah's twin sister? If that's true, then she could never be anything but Sarah's sister."
"True, but I didn't make a wish. The device isn't the stone. It doesn't follow the same rules."
"But you made a wish to make the device."
"Yes, but wishing for the device doesn't contradict any of the previous wishes," Joy explained.
"Oh yeah," Alison said. She looked down at the boy Karyn had become. "I think she's ... uh ... I mean he's waking up."
