Jon's mother decided to talk to Karyn's out-of-town relatives, the ones that Jon told her about. In this new reality, Jon's mother and almost everyone else in town remembered Karyn as always being Sarah McMillan's twin sister. Even with all of the evidence that Jon was being manipulated by magic, it was still hard for her to believe that Karyn used to be someone else, that she had a completely different family and a completely different life. And it was all because of one simple wish.
Jon told her mother about the original Karyn's aunt and uncle, who lived in Grandville (which was about ten miles away). And she explained that anyone outside the range of the stone wouldn't be affected by it. Jon figured that Grandville was far enough away that the original Karyn's relatives wouldn't have been affected by its magic, so Karyn's aunt and uncle would still think of Karyn as their tomboyish niece. (Jon checked Karyn's LiveJournal diary - which was a remnant from the reality where Karyn wasn't Sarah's sister - and found out where her relatives lived. Then she did a little more research to find out precisely who her aunt and uncle were and exactly what their phone number was. It was a lot of work, but if she could get the stone back, it would all be worth it.)
Jon's mother held the phone up to her head and dialed the phone number for the Oliver and Madeline Black residence.
After a few rings, a woman's voice was heard. "Hello?"
