It said: "Become a loser just like Jen and Ellen and also lose the friendship of Sarah and the cheerleaders."
"Now, that's interesting," said Jen.
"We can give her a taste of her nightmare, so she will be argh friends with us and then we can grab the stone.... or we can use that machine to turn our fantasies into reality, Jen."
"I know that... but we will have to decide quickly, before that bitch uses the stone again."
"She's gone," said Ellen. "We need to find her fast."
"Wait a minute," said Jen. "Is that her?"
"You're right! I'm sure of it!" Ellen saw a glimpse of her hiding behind a mall directory. Obviously she wanted to stay close, maybe make some more wishes and watch.
Jen put her finger on the "ACTIVATE" on the screen, but nothing happened. Then she ran to where Karyn was and yelled "Karyn!"
Of course Karyn's first reaction to that was to flee, but as soon as she fled, she was out in the open. The moment her path was in the same direction the device was pointed, it went off, since Jen's finger was already activating it.
A purple glow filled the area. Suddenly Karyn disappeared.
As the glow dissipated, Karyn came up from behind and grabbed Jen's hand, pulling her away from Ellen. It was impossible for her to have moved there--she must have disappeared and reappeared.
"What's the matter?" asked Jen. She wasn't sure if Karyn was back to normal. But she sincerely hoped it had worked.
"You and Ellen are the matter, Jen. What are you doing with her?"
"Look, Karyn," said Jen, "before you do anything else, I need to see the stone again."
Karyn handed it over and Jen breathed a sigh of relief. "I wish that I knew if I was friends with Karyn," she said. Then realizing it was true, she said, "I wish that I remembered being friends with Karyn."
Karyn just looked confused.
(Note: Karyn is still Sarah's twin because that was caused by a wish. Karyn doesn't remember the wish because she doesn't remember being Jen's enemy. She made Jon and Alan into girls while she was Jen's enemy, so she doesn't remember that either. Jen herself doesn't remember being a boy because she wasn't specific enough--she only wished to remember being friends with Karyn, and that was also true in a reality where she was a girl.)
"You see," said Jen, "this is what happened. We were experimenting and I made a fantasy and nightmare device. Your nightmare was to idolize your sister."
"I know," said Karyn. "I remember you tripped and dropped it so we never tried it. You're saying you didn't really trip?"
"Right. It changed you so that you idolized Sarah... and so you weren't with me and your room was full of Sarah pictures. You thought it was like that all along. Then I finally caught up with you and used a second nightmare. You became my friend again..."
"... and I remember it being that way all along," said Karyn. So I remember that you tripped and dropped it, but you really used it twice."
"Right. And Ellen... well, if I didn't have you as a best friend, I had to have had someone. It turned out to be Ellen. You see, there's two realities, one where you're my friend, and another where Ellen's my friend, but she remembers you being as bitchy as your sister. And you remember her that way."
"I get it... so the fix..."
"... is in the palm of my hand!" said Jen, holding up the stone. "I wish that Karyn, myself, and Ellen are all best friends of each other."
"There you are," said Ellen. "What was all that about?"
"It's a long story," said Jen. "But we're all friends now." Jen hugged both of her best friends briefly and a second later said "Now, I think we were going to go through this mall and get some clothes and stuff so we can look as good as Karyn.... At least all our problems with magic are solved."
