Different branches

The thing is, different branches take things in different ways. The only characters established in all branches are Jon, Karyn, Sarah, and Jon's grandfather, on account of being in the very first episode. Many, many branches have Zoe as Jon's sister, and in many of those she's a goth, but there are some branches in which she's not around. The concept of "recurring characters" doesn't really apply when different lines interpret characters in different ways (or don't use them at all).
