I'm from an Enterprise level services team, I'm used to the standard operating practices for these levels of environments to support data retention as standard operations for web 2.0 activities :) But you're right.
My major annoyance is that we already have a web archivist service, archive.org, yet some dumbasses - particularly media sites - delibertly block archive.org from archiving important content for replication later. Sure I can understand facebook, or youtube from blocking this kind of activity, but a smaller site that has no personal capabilites for data retention? It's a joke.
