The disappointed students didn't quite catch the ruse, nor the truth of the statement; on the surface it was a ruse, but if anyone really were to try the stone it wouldn't work for them, because in making the supposed 'mistake' in his reasoning statement, Jon also made the condition into a wish.
As time would go on, Jon would look back on this moment with both pride and trepidation, knowing that this moment could have gone so many ways if he hadn't so cleverly 'dealt' with this so unforseen situation... Ah, but hindsight is 20-20, and Jon really never had much for foresight, so there was really no way to tell how his classmates would react to this new development...
