Jon glanced around. Hmm... Wow, I feel weird, he thought. What’s going on? Am I wearing a backpack? He felt around and discovered nothing out of the ordinary there; something sure felt heavy on his back, though. Taking a walk around, most everything looked as he knew it to be. His room still had the wall posters of his favorite singers: Evanescence, One Republic, Ariana Grande… His walls seemed to be more pastel colored than he remembered, a nice blue, but it didn’t seem too bad. His computer was still there, with some odd stickers and decorations around the monitor and mouse; when did he make up his bed? Didn’t he usually leave it in a messier state?

He left his room and noticed his family seemed unchanged. Peeking in a crack through Zoe’s doorway, she seemed to be intent on one of her alternative magazines; Mikey was glued to his TV screen, tapping away furiously on his PlayStation controller; his Mom was cooking dinner.

He strolled back to his room and shut the door. Sitting down on his computer chair, he pulled out his phone and dialed Karyn’s number. His own phone lit up, making several rings. “Hello?” Jon answered. “Who is this?” There was no answer, so he hung up. That was weird. Okay, time to try this again. This time, he seemed to get through.

“Hey Jon, what’s up? How’s your day going?” Hmm, thought Jon. She doesn’t sound any different either. I’ll have to take this rather scientifically the next couple days, see if I notice anything out of the ordinary. “Hey Karyn! Things are going well here, just a little bit bored.”

“Don’t try anything with that stone: we don’t want any changes happening from a rash wish that wasn’t thought through well!” she cautioned.

“Um, yeah, about that—”

Karyn cut him off. “Oh! Before I forget, there’s a green knee-length dress over here, it doesn’t belong to anyone in my family. I’m not sure who exactly owns it, but you were the only one to have visited my house recently. Would you mind coming by tomorrow and picking it up? Oh, and I might need your thoughts on some of my assignments... Junior year’s been hard.”

“Yeah sure, Karyn, that’s fine, I’ll be sure to drop…” Huh, he thought, that’s odd too. Just what is going on today? I’d better find out. “Good bye Karyn, I’ll talk to you later!” She relayed her goodbyes too, and he hung up.

Jon got up again and headed over to his bed. He sat down and, reaching down under, retrieved the box with the stone. “I wish Karyn also knew about my wish and we’d both understand just what the heck is going on.” The moment he finished, Jon felt a sudden, splitting headache and passed out, falling back onto his bed covers, the stone still in his grasp.
