Karyn woke up to the grating buzz of her alarm clock, vaguely wondering why she was lying on her back.
Still drowsy, she was just reflecting on what a strange dream she'd had when something long and yellow fell in her eyes.
Oh, shit.
Well, I guess that explains the sore chest. She thought irritably, as she got ready for school.
After fixing her hair (which took much longer than she was used to due to her impromptu magical make over) she examined her new wardrobe, frowning at what it contained. She didn't like the idea of having to fit in with Sarah and her friends, but most of her clothes would regardless thanks to her wish. Sighing, she picked out a tight fitting pink halter top, dark blue miniskirt, and a pair of high heeled shoes.
Finally, she surveyed the vanity filled with make-up supplies she hadn't had a day ago.
What the hell, it's probably my last day like this, and I have to fit in...
She sat down and began applying it.
When she was done she admired her handiwork in the mirror. It wasn't as much as Sarah would have preferred, she knew, but it would hopefully be enough to satisfy her. Besides, she would get everything back to normal today.
I could definitely believe I'm one of Sarah's friends. She thought, giving the mirror one last look.
Suddenly, there was a knock on her door.
"Karyn sweety, are you ready yet? Stephanie's here to pick you up." Her mother said.
Stephanie's here? Shit.
"Alright Mom. I'll be right down." She replied. Sure enough, she found Stephanie waiting for her by the front door, with Sarah waiting in the car.
"What are you doing here?" Karyn asked. This could ruin everything. I have to meet up with Jon.
"Uh..what do you mean? I always pick you up." Stephanie answered.
"Oh. Right."
"Honestly Karyn, you're such a blonde sometimes."
Yeah, sometimes. Karyn thought.
"Nice outfit Karyn." Sarah said as Karyn climbed into the back seat. Unlike yesterday, she sounded sincere.
"Thanks." Karyn replied, once again surprised to hear Sarah calling her by name.
All Karyn's thoughts of ditching them vanished when they reached the school. As they pulled into the parking lot, she glimpsed Jon standing in their usual spot.
"C'mon Karyn, let's go." Stacey urged.
"But..." Karyn protested as they started walking towards the school, looking back towards Jon.
"Talk to him later." Sarah whispered.
Karyn had no choice but to go with them and hope she got another chance later that day.
Jon just stared as he watched Karyn glance back at him, then walk into the school building.
He'd headed home bewildered yesterday afternoon, barely able to believe what he'd seen. He'd waited that night, expecting her to call and ask about the stone. Sure, they'd agreed to meet again the next morning, but he knew Karyn, and he knew that her curiosity would get the better of her. But there had been nothing.
And now, here she was, again in the company of Sarah McMillan, who Jon had thought was the one person she most despised in school, looking for all the world like one of her cheerleader groupies.
Rationally, Jon knew that he shouldn't jump to conclusions, but part of him couldn't help but think that she was reacting to her wish in a very unexpected way. That maybe she liked being that way. And something about seeing her with Sarah McMillan of all people, while simultaneously ignoring him, got that part very angry.
He reached into his pocket, and felt the stone resting there.
