"Wait!" said Karyn. "Don't jump off a bridge."
"Okay, I won't jump off a bridge," replied Jon. "So anyway, we could use our new bodies to..."
"Wait! Wait! Jon, hold on..."
"What is it, Karyn. You sound panicked."
"I am! Jon, I told you to jump off a bridge and you immediately wanted to do it! Something's funny here. It's like you're obeying any order you get. Jon, go take a shower."
"What? Now? Okay, Karyn, but as soon as I'm finished..."
"Jon, stay here. Look, you aren't playing a trick on me, are you?"
"Why would I?"
"Because we're cyborgs. Part machine. Quite a lot of us is machine, in fact. We must be programmed to obey orders."
"What, really? Karyn, if that's true, go stand on your head."
Karyn took a step back, did a backflip, and landed near the wall, on her hands upside down. Some of the floor splintered as her weight hit it. She stayed there doing a headstand until Jon said "Enough. Karyn, stop that. I believe you..."
"But I wanted to stand on my head. I just thought it was a good idea when you said it."
"Of course you did, that's how we're programmed. Now believe me."
"Whoa... Jon, you're right. I guess I do believe you. We're both programmed... I think we need a wish."
"But what do we do?" wondered Jon. "If we just say we don't have to obey orders, sooner or later someone will tell us to do something and figure out something's wrong when we don't."
"Hmm. Okay. I wish that if Jon or I would have to obey an order, instead, we'd feel like we want to obey it but could still choose to stop."
