Jon was feeling a bit bored, so he decided to go downstairs and read one of the books he was assigned for school. Getting down the stairs was an adventure in and of itself; his new leg-arms were much weaker than his old legs, so he was forced to lean heavily on the banister to keep from falling over.

Once downstairs, he reached inside his backpack and grabbed the book from inside. Almost immediately, he felt a familiar tingle, and braced himself for the changes.

First, his hands became stiff, and bent at right angles to his wrists, forcing him to drop the book, which hit the floor with a thud. He felt an overwhelming urge to stretch his arms and yawn, so he lifted them above his head. As he did so, he felt them twist and lengthen, so that they were almost twice as long as before, with his hands palms up and his fingers pointing forwards.

As the tingling subsided, he noticed that his biceps were much thicker than before, and were rubbing against his cheeks. Experimentally, he tried to flex his left arm, but found that he couldn't lower it below his shoulder. He tried clenching his hand, with similar results; his fingers all moved at once, and could only bend partway. He was beginning to suspect what might have happened, but just to confirm he swung his "arm" down so he could see it.

A leg. Somehow, both of Jon's arms had transformed into feminine, hairless legs. Where his hands had been were small, girlish feet with red nail polish on the tips. He wiggled his "fingers" and his new toes shook in unison.

Jon glanced back down at the book he had been hoping to read. It was, he noted with irony, a copy of Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms".
