Dave opened the door and saw Breanne. He smiled.
"Dave, is Jake here? I've been trying to call him, but his phone must be off," she said, walking into the apartment.
"Nope, Jake's not here." Not anymore, he thought, wickedly.
"Then where could he be? He said he had plans for my birthday and ..."
"Well, we can make new plans."
"We? Dave, you're a nice guy and all. But you're not my boyfriend and this occasion is ..."
"What if we could change that?" Dave asked suddenly.
"Change what?" And then, after Breanne walked further into the apartment, she asked "What ... what happened to this place? Where did you get all this stuff?"
