"A lesbian?"
"What?" replied John.
"It's what you said," said Jon. "You want to become an attractive girl, so you can impress other girls. I think I know what 'impress' means. Is there some particular girl you have in mind?"
"Yeah, her name's Vicky. We're good friends, but she's a lesbian. She doesn't like guys. She even once told me that if I was a girl she might go out with me, but since I'm not I'd better do something else..."
"Are you sure she'd go out with you if you were a girl?" asked Jon.
"No, I'm not sure. But that's why it's only a week, right?"
"Okay. I've got just the thing for you." He handed John a potion. "Drink this and you'll turn into a girl for the next week. It also makes people a little suggestible, just enough that if you tell someone that you turned into a girl, they'll believe you and they won't scream about how it's impossible."
"How much are you charging?"
"I usually charge around five dollars, just because people don't take good care of things if they get them for free. If I have a magic shop, of course, I don't really need money."
"I don't have five dollars. Do you take credit cards?"
"Sure," said Jon. He rang up John and watched him sign the credit card slip. Idly, he remarked, "It's spelled with an 'h'. That's good. You wouldn't believe how often people mess up mine."
"What do you think?" asked Karyn. (She was still around--Karyn had come into existence when Jon had time travelled and seen his younger self lonely, and wished that his younger self had a friend. The young Jon split into Jon and Karyn.)
"Well, I think he's going to use that potion," replied Jon. "The potion's fine. It does just what I said it does. Whether he's going to get a date with a lesbian isn't up to us, though...."
