"I wish it was December right now," Jon said, holding the stone. But it didn't do anything. Why didn't it grant his wish?
Santa let out a sigh of relief.
"My wish didn't get granted."
"And that's a good thing," Santa said.
"What? Why?"
"The stone you have has a limited range, remember?"
Jon looked down at the stone in his hand, remembering that his grandfather said something about that in his letter. That it only had a range of a couple miles, or something. "So you're saying that if my wish would have worked, then ..."
"Then it would only be December here in town, but April everywhere else. Jon, you could have ripped a hole in the space-time continuum. Luckily, I was here to prevent that from happening."
"What do you mean?" Jon asked.
"I made the stones remember?" He held up the one he was holding, the one that was painted red and green. "With this one, I can prevent magic, use magic, or redirect magic. Basically, it gives me control over any magic being used in my presence. I'm so glad that I had it with me when I was summoned here by your stone."
"Okay, so I can't wish it to be December, but what can I do? If my grandfather is still alive, I need to find him. He could be in trouble."
