Jane had never been married. Mark Gibson had disappeared from a house that was no longer his. The stone had changed reality so that Jane never fell in love with Mark, and thus never married him.
When Jane discovered the stone that her father sent her, she immediately wished to be the hottest woman in town. She wasn't exactly ugly, but she was kind of plain. And the men she was attracted to didn't want a plain woman. She thought that if she could make herself sexy, then maybe she could actually get a date that lasted. She couldn't possibly have known that her wish would be interpreted so differently than what she meant.
She looked over at the doctor and nurse and waited for them to leave the room. When they finally did, she reached over towards the bedside cabinet. She hid the stone in the top drawer when she was brought in. She didn't want someone to find out what she had and keep it for themselves.
She opened the drawer and took the stone out.
