Janet hesitated. "I don't know," she said. "What's going to happen this morning? Or today?"
"They won't notice it," said Karyn. "They can't, Jon. It's not going to show for a while, and I bet you could wish to slow down the pregnancy. You could be grown up and married before you start showing."
"Seriously?" asked Janet.
"Yeah, seriously."
"You don't get it, Karyn. I'm a girl. And I'm not exactly used to it. That becoming grown up and married... well, I'm going to be marrying a guy now, unless I manage a lesbian marriage. And the pregnancy... slowing down for not, I still know that I am pregnant. Know that this wish granting sperm created by magic combined with part of me to become a baby. It's the biggest part of having a body which is different from mine by a whole lot of little parts. And don't tell me you're a girl and there's nothing wrong with it. It's not me. I'm like a reverse transsexual, I'm a guy trapped in the body of a girl. And you'd better start calling me Janet now or you'll slip up in front of someone else."
"I don't think that makes it reverse," said Karyn. "Look, J-- Janet, I can always give you girl advice. If you really need to know how to strap a bra on or something I can show you. You know what I'd really suggest?"
Janet shook her head.
"It's from that book you like."
Janet glanced at a shelf with some paperbacks on it. Some of them had changed when she became a girl. "Dammit, even something like that. Those aren't the same books. I'll have to wish them back...."
"I'm sorry, Janet, I didn't mean it that way. It's from that book you like... Don't Panic!"
"I'm not panicking, this is still the culture shock," said Janet. "And that's a quote, more or less. I bet Janet doesn't even know that book."
"I'm serious. You had a day to get into trouble. Don't you think you should wait another day, or at least until evening, when maybe you can think a little more sensibly? We can just go downstairs and have breakfast. It's not as if there's some special kind of girl's breakfast. Or girl's algebra classes."
"I don't know," said Janet.
"Please," said Karyn. "We're still friends. I don't want to see you panic and do something you might regret. Okay?"
"I still don't know, but I suppose it can't hurt. Do you mind Captain Crunch and juice?" Janet headed out of the room.
