"Thanks," Sarah said, grinning. She touched the belly. "Now, before this thing makes me pregnant for real, I wish that the person who is wearing it when it becomes real will be Jon." That would protect Sarah against finding herself suddenly pregnant, anyway.
On the other hand, she didn't know how close it was to being done. If there was a minute left, she knew that Jon would be putting it on before the minute was up, even if he had to wake up and take it.
She waited a few seconds. Jon didn't suddenly wake up and take the wishing belly. Of course, it could always be the next minute, or the next....
It wasn't, of course. Sarah thought of what wishes she should make. She decided at first to wish for something simple, as a test. "I wish to have a new car."
Nothing visibly changed, since they were inside the school.
"I wish that, uhh, I got an A on the history test I got back last period."
Getting the test from between the pages of her notebook where had put it, she saw that it had worked.
"Okay, now, I wish I knew how much time was left on this belly."
She knew. Two days. She had two days to make all the wishes she wanted, as long as she didn't take it off and put it on. It may very well advance by an amount greater than two days if she ever had to put it on again.
Meanwhile, Jon, his head reeling in pain from Biff's blow, still managed to get an idea. Sarah wished that Jon would be wearing the belly when it became real. Maybe it wouldn't grant the wish by zapping itself onto Jon. Maybe it would grant the wish by making it easier for Jon to take it, so Jon would already have it when it became real. It might even get easier as the time approached, but maybe he could try now and get it back before Sarah made any really dangerous wishes.
Jon leaped on Sarah. Biff tried to fend him off but, somehow, the physically fit jock still tripped, missed completely and ran right into Moose. They fell in a heap on the ground. Jon tore at Sarah's blouse with one hand and put another hand under it, touching the belly. "I wish Biff and Moose are asleep and Sarah gives me this belly now."
Nothing seemed to happen to Biff and Moose, who were already on the ground. Sarah found herself forced to take it off, but had the presence of mind to start a wish when touching it to take it off.
"I wish Sarah is asleep too," said Jon.
Sarah's head rolled back and her mouth fell shut, but she continued, as if sleepwalking. Jon sighed in relief once the belly was back in his hands and Sarah collapsed. He bet that there would soon be news about the new "mysterious sleeping sickness" going around the school. Now he just needed to take off his inert belly and put the wishing belly back on....
