"What are you two up to?" a voice suddenly asked. It was Jon's mother. She was standing out in the hall, looking at them through the open bedroom door. She startled Jon so much that he wasn't able to catch the flipped coin. It fell to the floor and bounced off in some unknown direction. He'd have to flip a coin again. "Shouldn't you be heading off to school?" she asked them.
"Uh, yeah. We were just ... talking," Jon said.
"You can do that on the way to school," she said, walking into the room. "Now come on. You don't want to be late," she said, trying to guide them out.
As they began to move towards the door, Jon suddenly stopped and turned around. He forgot the stone. But then he froze. His mom was holding it!
"Mom, don't touch that!" he yelled.
"Jon, what in heaven's name is wrong with you? It's just a stone. Now I wish you would do what I say and ... oh!" Suddenly, the stone glowed, surprising her.
Both Jon and Karyn walked up to Jon's mother (Jane) and bowed their heads slightly. "As you say, Mistress," they said in unison.
"What?"
