Norman Rogers, a notorious weirdo and loner, sat in the desk next to Karyn's in their homeroom. When she rushed Jon out of the class, he noticed that she had left a funny, reddish, slightly metallic-looking rock on her desk. He glanced around to see if anyone was looking, and quickly snatched the stone off of her desk. He slipped it into his pocket, and half-listened as Miss Tuttle began her lecture.
A few minutes later, Karyn came running back into the classroom. "Um, sorry Miss Tuttle, I forgot something here!"
Miss Tuttle glared at her, and said, "Is Jon at the nurse's office now? Is he alright?"
Karyn stammered a response, saying "Um, yeah, I... yeah, he's there, but I need to get something for him..."
"What do you need to get for him?" asked Miss Tuttle, looking annoyed.
"I... I can't really explain it right now..." said Karyn.
"If you can't explain it, then perhaps you should return to your seat, Karyn." replied Miss Tuttle.
"You don't understand!" gasped Karyn, "this is really important!"
Miss Tuttle stared at Karyn in silence for a moment, and then said "Karyn, I will be happy to discuss this with you after class, but right now you need to return to your seat."
"But Miss Tuttle!"
"That's enough, Karyn. Sit down right now, or there will be serious consequences." Miss Tuttle scolded.
Karyn thought "It's alright, I'll get the stone, and in a few minutes I'll ask for permission to go to the bathroom." She returned to her desk, and gasped when she noticed that the stone was missing. She checked the floor under her desk, and began checking her pockets and everything else around. She couldn't see the stone anywhere, and started to panic.
"Norm, did you see a stone on my desk?" she whispered.
"No," lied Norm.
"Are you sure?" whispered Karyn.
"Karyn, please be quiet," warned Miss Tuttle, "you're distracting the whole class."
Karyn sighed. She tried to look around surreptitiously, but still couldn't see the stone. Time was going by - poor Jon was trapped in the girl's bathroom going through something he never could have expected, and it was her fault!
Desperate, Karyn whispered to Norm again, "You're sure you didn't see a stone around here?"
"No!" whispered Norm, as he played with the stone in his pocket, "I wish you'd shut up about it!"
Karyn noticed that Norm was getting defensive, and started to suspect that the little freak had taken the stone. She leaned over to threaten him, and said "Mm mmm mmmm mmm mmmmm, m'm mmmmm mm mmmm mmm!"
Karyn was shocked. She couldn't open her mouth!
"Mmm MMM mmmm mmm mmmm!" she hummed.
"Karyn, WHAT is the matter?" said Miss Tuttle, clearly annoyed.
"Mmmm mmmm mmmmmmmmm mm mmmm!" Karyn replied.
"Very funny, Karyn. Now stop being silly and tell me what's the matter."
"Mm mmmmm mm mmmmm mmmm! M mmm'm mmmm!" Karyn cried.
"Karyn, this is your last warning. You have a choice..." said Miss Tuttle.
"MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!" replied Karyn, desperately trying to open her mouth.
"Alright, that's enough. I'm taking you to the Principal's office. Class, please answer the questions on page fifty-six."
Miss Tuttle took Karyn my the arm and marched her out of the classroom. Karyn said "MmmmMmmmmmmmMMMmmmMMMM!" all the way out. Seconds after the door swung shut, the other students began muttering and giggling about Karyn, speculating what she was trying to do.
Norm thought "That was strange," and began to wonder why Karyn wanted the stone so badly. "Maybe her weird mumbling had something to do with the stone..." he mused...
