Jon held onto the stone (not realizing that it was actually The Barter Stone) and said "I wish I had a super hot sports car." The stone glowed.
"That's your wish?" Karyn asked.
"What? I thought it would be cool to have one." He handed the stone over to her. "What are you going to wish for?"
"Something more practical than that."
"What's not practical about a car?"
"Sports car. Jon, you're doing it for looks. That's not practical."
Jon crossed his arms and grunted. But then he stood up from his bed and walked to his window. "Whoa, man! There it is, right in the driveway!"
Karyn shook her head, then said "I wish I had bras that fit me." The stone glowed and suddenly her bra didn't seem as tight. What a relief, she thought.
"I'm gonna go down and check it out," Jon said, excitedly.
"You don't want to use the stone again?"
"I'll do it later." Jon left the room and few seconds later Karyn heard him call her name.
She ran out into the hall. "What is it?"
"The hallway looks different." He pointed towards the end of the hall. "Mom and Dad's room. It should be right there."
Karyn knew he was right. When Jon told her to stay out of his room so he could get dressed, she clearly remembered there being a door there. And that was only a few minutes ago.
"You don't think reality changed, do you?" Karyn asked.
"How does wishing for a car do this?" He walked towards Mikey's bedroom and opened the door. "Karyn, look."
Karyn looked and saw that it was Jon's parent's bedroom. "I don't get it."
Suddenly, Jon realized something. "About six years ago, my parents put an addition onto the house. They added a new master bedroom and master bathroom. This is how it looked back then, without the addition."
"But what does that have to do with wishing for a car?" Karyn asked. "I'm sure you wouldn't have had the car when you were ten years old."
She was right. Whatever was going on, it had nothing to do with his wish. Something else was going on here.
Unknown to Jon and Karyn, though, what was happening was related to wishing for the sports car. The Barter Stone determined that the addition to Jon's house and all the things that had occurred within it for the past six years was worth the value of the car.
Karyn's wish for new bras was a much lesser wish, but it still had a price. What was it?
